Name: Sophia Callington
Age: Sixteen, as of October 30th
Year:Currently in her Sixth year at Hogwarts.
House: Ravenclaw
Gender: Female
Blood: Half Blood
Family:
Takahisa Mina – Mother – AWOL
Bernard Callington – Father – Parental Guardian
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Appearance: Fragile. It tends to be the first word that comes to mind when meeting Sophia for the first time. Standing at 5 ft 4 inches and weighing in at 102 lbs., some tend to harbour suspicions that she suffers from anorexia. Being half-Asian, Sophia bears the notorious flat chest and thin limbs inherited from her mother’s side. Her ivory hair and almond-shaped eyes are also inherited from her mother. On occasion, she has been known to wear colored lenses in place of her usual light brown irises. Various violets, blues and greens have been made at her disposal. Her eyes are slightly below 20/20 vision, making contacts an easy way to correct the imperfection.
On the other side of things, the waves in her hair and several of her facial features are clear combinations between her Asian and British descent. She has a pixie nose which is quick to turn pink in the cold, and colorless lips prone to slow, easy smiles. Her faintly arching brows react only ¼ as often as her eyes themselves, and even then, only in response to the most intense of emotions. And in spite of her size, Sophia carries a sense of maturity which causes her to look older than her actual age. In fact, she is quite used to being mistaken for a seventh year. Hidden out of view, between her shoulder blades, is a small tattoo of a black sun. It consists of a solid circle and 5 triangles encircling it, seeming to have some sort of meaning for her.
Celeb Claim: Mika Nakashima
Personality: As a person who spent nearly half of her life with a wide variety of people, Sophia managed to keep her head on her shoulders no matter what went on around her. As a child, it was considered strange behaviour to be both calm and earnest. She was always willing – but never overeager – to help the nurses round up the children for dinner, or find the one who strayed too far into the forest when they visited the park. Whether older or younger, deserving or undeserving, Sophia was always willing to help. With her quiet manner, it was easy for others to take advantage of her. And the most unfeeling often did; some of the nurses in the orphanage discovered how convenient it was to have Sophia around. Just in case. As such, she is often depended upon by others to finish the job, or to do a good job. And being able, she does so consistently, scarcely breathing a word of complaint. Is she really a pushover? No, not in reality. The truth is, Sophia knows very few ways to express kindness, and tries to do so whenever the opportunity arises. It seems to bring her contentment to help others, and to try and bring out the good that they may not be able to see themselves.
Far from a social butterfly, some tend to find her serene attitude a bit disconcerting. She has never been known to be particularly much of anything – be it shy or outgoing, funny or annoying. Those who know her less may assume that she is shy, or a bit on the outskirts of the social circles, but Sophia has always raised herself on her own independence. She takes on a sort of big sister role to everyone, and doesn’t really think much about it. Being a bit quieter naturally lends room to observe, and Sophia uncannily seems to figure out the most about a person from the moment she lays her eyes on them. Not in a malicious manner, but merely taking everything into stride in accordance with her easy-going manner.

History: At the age of 21, Sophia’s mother (Takahisa Mina) emigrated from Hiroshima, Japan to the United Kingdom. In Wales, she continued her university education towards becoming a nurse. Mina, having limited savings and an aged mother back home, was forced to share a grungy apartment with three other university students. Sparks flew between one of her roommates and herself, and eventually, a relationship developed between Bernard Callington and herself. Bernard, being a half-blooded wizard, had graduated many years before from Durmstrang. He seemed an upright, kindly man, and Mina trusted him wholeheartedly without truly knowing who – or what – he was. Only a few months into their relationship, Mina found out that she was pregnant. She tried to keep it a secret from Bernard, knowing that he would be displeased. They were still young, and each of them had their own hopes and dreams to fulfill – there was no room for a child. Rather than to break the news to Bernard, Mina chose to break off their relationship entirely. Without explanation, she packed up her belongings and stole away one night, staying at various hostels around England until the birth of Sophia. During this time, she had managed to avoid Bernard despite his incessant attempts in contacting her. Mina was forced to give Sophia up to an orphanage almost immediately after her birth, having insufficient means to raise her own child.
As a result, Sophia was raised in an orphanage in London up until the age of 7. John Dashwood’s Housing for Unfortunate Children was rather crowded, and shortages of food and medical supplies were the norm. As was the case for all orphanages around London, there were more going in than there were going out. The orphans who managed to survive for over a year often met an untimely death within another year, usually with food poisoning or pneumonia. Oddly enough, Sophia never caught more than the sniffles no matter how thin and sickly she looked. In any case, being thin and sickly seemed to be expected of an orphan. Unlike the other children, she did not inquire incessantly about her parents. Young as she was, she had figured out over the years, that the one thing they all had in common was the lack of ‘parents’. The nurses never bothered to cushion the blow of telling them that all of them had been abandoned. Personally, Sophia liked to believe that her parents had passed away – it was much more comforting than the idea of being abandoned. While there was no formal public education was offered to the orphans, Sophia displayed a knack for picking up languages. Early on, she was befriended by another orphan nearly 8 years her senior. Camille spoke only French, but became close friends with Sophia as the younger was willing and able to learn anything that struck her fancy. Camille taught her to read and write basic French, and the two became nearly inseparable. When Sophia had reached the general age of 7 – she wasn’t sure when her actual birth date was – an aged Bernard Callington arrived in search of his daughter. When Sophia was brought before him, he wept with the striking resemblance she had to her mother. She neither resisted nor embraced the idea of finally having a parent, but only quietly claimed that in all actuality she ‘did not need a father and perhaps it would be better that he claimed one of the other orphans’. Quite the unexpected reaction, but Bernard was not to be diverted. He ‘adopted’ Sophia, and she left behind Camille with the promise of keeping in touch.
Living with this man who called himself her ‘father’ in a small apartment, Sophia seemed to grow independent of her father. She referred to him only as ‘Bernard’, and refused – no matter how much he pleaded – to call him dad. Their relationship was, at the best of times, strained. Sophia did not care to hear about her mother, or the possible reasoning behind her being left at the orphanage…what she wanted most of all was simply to go to school. She found a deep sense of solace in facts and language. Enrolled into the first grade shortly after being ‘adopted’, Sophia attended an academy for girls which offered instruction in the French language. At the age of 11, a letter from Hogwarts arrived…and magic suddenly took a strong hold on her life as well. Upon discovering that her father was a wizard, this common ‘interest’ brought them ever so closer together. However, she continues to call him by his first name, and only returns home for the summer holidays.
